Why does seborrheic dermatitis cause oily skin?

Short answer
Most people with Seborrheic Dermatitis notice oily skin because inflamed oil-rich areas collect sebum, shed cells and surface scale.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical site
- Oil-rich areas such as the nose folds, eyebrows, ears and chest can be involved.
- Gentle approach
- Cleanse without scrubbing and protect the skin barrier.
The skin process
Sebum is produced by glands beside hair follicles. It normally supports the skin barrier, but seborrheic dermatitis involves an inflammatory response in areas where these glands are active. The mixture of sebum, shed skin cells and scale can make the surface feel greasy or appear shiny. Redness, mild swelling, itching or flaky edges may appear at the same time. Oily Skin is a very common presentation of Seborrheic Dermatitis, but oily skin by itself does not establish a diagnosis.
Ways to reduce irritation
Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat rather than rub. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a medicated cleanser or cream for affected areas; use it only as directed and keep it away from the eyes. Avoid scrubbing grains, alcohol-heavy products and thick cosmetic layers over active patches, since these can irritate the barrier. Choose non-comedogenic moisturiser if the skin feels tight after cleansing, even when the surface looks oily.
When to contact a clinician
Book an assessment if oiliness is accompanied by persistent redness, burning, tenderness, cracking, bleeding or oozing. Care is also warranted when the rash reaches the eyelids or ear canals, affects daily comfort, or does not improve with gentle care. A clinician can separate seborrheic dermatitis from acne, rosacea, psoriasis or contact reactions and recommend a suitable plan.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which areas show inflammation, whether a medicated product is appropriate, and how long to continue it after the skin improves. Tell your doctor about cosmetics, cleansers and hair products that touch the face, and ask what changes would require review.

Questions people ask
Does oily skin need harsh drying products?
Usually not. Harsh products can irritate the barrier and make an inflamed rash feel worse, even if the surface remains shiny.
Can moisturiser be used on oily affected skin?
A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser may help when cleansing leaves the skin tight; ask a clinician if the rash is active or severe.
