Why does seborrheic dermatitis cause an itchy scalp?

Seborrheic dermatitis tends to affect oil-rich areas, including the scalp. Changes in skin oil and an overgrowth of a normal yeast that lives on skin can contribute to irritation in susceptible people. The resulting inflammation may feel itchy, tight or sore, while loose scale can add friction.
