Why does scalp ringworm cause flaky scalp?

Flaky Scalp is a common presentation of Scalp Ringworm. The flakes may sit around affected hairs and appear with itching, redness, broken hairs, or patchy thinning. Scratching can lift scale but may damage the surface and spread irritation. Some cases form a dry, powdery layer, while others become more inflamed or crusted. Flaking alone has several possible causes, so its combination with hair changes and the scalp pattern is more useful than the flakes by themselves.

Arrange an assessment when flaking persists, spreads, or appears with patchy hair loss or broken hairs. Scalp ringworm often requires prescription medicine taken by mouth; an antifungal shampoo may be added to reduce surface spread but may not clear infection inside hair. Do not share brushes, hats, towels, or bedding. Wash or replace items according to clinical advice, and avoid picking at crusts or using irritating scalp products.

Seek prompt care for severe soreness, warmth, swelling, pus, thick crusts, fever, or a tender boggy area. Get reviewed if flakes continue alongside new bald patches, if symptoms worsen after treatment begins, or if household contacts develop similar scalp changes.
