Why does scalp ringworm cause hair breakage?

Hair Breakage is a common presentation of Scalp Ringworm. Instead of shedding from the root, affected hairs may fracture close to the scalp, leaving uneven stubble or dark dots inside a scaly patch. Itching can lead to rubbing and scratching, adding mechanical stress to already fragile hairs. Redness, scaling, tenderness, or a spreading patch can occur alongside the breakage. Hair breakage has other possible causes, so a scalp examination is needed before assuming an infection.

Book a clinical assessment for new breakage accompanied by scale, itching, or patchy changes. Scalp ringworm usually needs an oral antifungal selected by a clinician; topical products alone may not treat infection within the hair. Handle hair gently, avoid tight styles and harsh chemical treatments, and do not share brushes, caps, towels, or bedding until advice has been given. Tell the clinician about similar symptoms in household members or pets.

Seek prompt care if the scalp becomes very painful, swollen, soft, crusted, or produces pus, or if fever develops. Arrange review when breakage spreads, bald areas appear, or symptoms do not begin improving with the prescribed plan. Early treatment can limit ongoing inflammation around the follicles.
