Why does scalp ringworm cause bald patches?

Bald Patches is a common presentation of Scalp Ringworm. The infection can weaken hairs close to the scalp, leaving short broken hairs, black dots, scaling, or areas where hair has fallen out. The skin may itch, feel sore, or look red and swollen. A patch may have a clearer centre or a more inflamed edge, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Other conditions can also produce patchy hair loss, so examination matters.

Arrange medical assessment promptly when a child or adult develops a new patch of scalp hair loss with scale or itching. Scalp ringworm commonly needs medicine taken by mouth because shampoo alone may not reach infected hairs inside the follicle. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, towels, or pillowcases while the cause is being assessed. Wash personal items as advised and mention household members or pets with similar lesions.

Seek prompt care for a painful, boggy swelling, pus, heavy crusting, fever, rapidly enlarging patches, or marked tenderness. These features can signal a stronger inflammatory reaction and need treatment to protect the scalp. Get reviewed if hair loss continues after treatment begins or if new patches appear.
