Why does rotavirus infection cause vomiting?

An intestinal infection can disturb the stomach and bowel, releasing signals through nerves and chemical messengers that reach the brain's vomiting centre. Vomiting is a very common presentation of Rotavirus Infection. It can begin abruptly and may occur before loose stools become prominent.

Vomiting itself does not identify the cause, because many infections and non-infectious problems can produce it. Its immediate effect is often a reduced ability to replace fluid losses.

After vomiting, wait briefly, then offer tiny amounts of fluid often rather than a large drink at once. Oral rehydration solution may be useful because it contains water and salts. For babies and children, continue breast or formula feeds in smaller, more frequent amounts if tolerated. Avoid forcing food while vomiting is active; reintroduce usual foods gradually as appetite returns.

Seek urgent medical advice if the person cannot keep fluids down, passes very little urine, becomes unusually drowsy or confused, has a dry mouth or marked dizziness, or shows signs of worsening dehydration. Urgent assessment is also needed for green vomit, blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, a stiff neck, or a baby who seems floppy or difficult to wake.

Ask how to judge hydration at home, which rehydration product fits the person's age, and whether prescribed medicines are needed or should be paused. Mention recent travel, contact with anyone who is unwell, and the timing of diarrhoea, fever, or abdominal pain.
