Why does pneumonia cause chills?

Inflammation in the air sacs can release immune signals that reset the body's temperature control point. Until the body reaches that higher temperature, muscles may shiver to make heat; this can feel like a chill or a vigorous rigor. Chills is a common presentation of Pneumonia, but chills can also occur with many other infections and non-infectious problems. They need to be considered alongside breathing symptoms, chest discomfort, fever, and how unwell you feel.

Rest, sip fluids if you can swallow safely, and keep comfortably warm without overheating. Note when the chills began, whether they come with a temperature, and any cough, phlegm, breathlessness, or chest pain. Arrange a medical assessment promptly if pneumonia is suspected, because a clinician may listen to your lungs and decide whether tests or treatment are needed. Take medicines only as directed and complete any prescribed treatment unless a clinician changes the plan.

Seek urgent medical help for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or an inability to keep fluids down. Get same-day advice if chills occur with worsening breathlessness, a persistent fever, marked weakness, or symptoms that are not improving. Older adults, young children, pregnant people, and people with lung disease or reduced immunity may need earlier assessment.
