Why does pet allergy cause sneezing?

Dander, saliva and dried urine from animals contain proteins that can trigger an allergy in some people. Once these particles enter the nose, immune cells can release chemicals that make the lining swollen, itchy and sensitive. Sneezing is a reflex that forcefully clears material from the nasal passages, but it may continue while the allergic irritation is active.

Sneezing is a very common presentation of Pet Allergy. Colds, dust, perfume, smoke and other allergies can also cause sneezing, so symptoms should be judged by their pattern, triggers and associated signs.

Wash hands after contact with an animal and avoid touching your nose or eyes until you do. Keeping pets out of the bedroom, washing bedding, and cleaning surfaces where allergens collect can reduce exposure indoors. If you visit someone with pets, changing clothes after the visit may help limit allergen transfer.

A pharmacist or clinician can discuss suitable allergy medicines and how to use nasal sprays effectively. Bring a list of your current medicines and mention if you have asthma, are pregnant, or have a long-term nasal condition.

Seek non-urgent medical advice when sneezing is frequent, disrupts sleep or everyday activities, or is accompanied by persistent blockage, facial pain or wheeze. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, or symptoms that worsen quickly after animal exposure.
