Why does pet allergy cause itchy eyes?

Allergens from an animal can be carried on dander, saliva or dried urine and settle on hands, clothing and household surfaces. When they reach the eyes, the immune system can react and the thin lining over the white of the eye becomes irritated. Rubbing can intensify the itch and make the eyes look redder.

Itchy Eyes is a very common presentation of Pet Allergy. Itchy eyes can also occur with other allergies, dry eyes, irritants or an eye infection, so the trigger and accompanying symptoms matter.

Try not to rub your eyes. Wash hands after touching an animal, rinse the face after close contact, and keep pets out of the bedroom if symptoms are troublesome. Cleaning soft furnishings and using a clean cool compress over closed eyelids can reduce comfort problems for some people.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy eye drops, an oral allergy medicine, or another approach is suitable for you. Tell them about contact lenses, pregnancy, glaucoma, and any existing eye treatment before using eye drops.

Get medical advice if symptoms continue despite avoiding the suspected trigger, affect sleep or work, or recur often. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, sensitivity to light, reduced vision, marked swelling around an eye, injury, or a thick discharge, especially if one eye is affected.

Ask whether the pattern suggests an allergy, which products are appropriate with contact lenses, and how to use them safely if you also have nasal allergy symptoms.
