Why does olecranon bursitis cause elbow pain?

Short answer
Most people with Olecranon Bursitis notice elbow pain because the swollen bursa is irritated when the elbow moves or rests on a surface.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening at the elbow
The olecranon bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion over the pointed back of the elbow. Repeated leaning, a knock, or ongoing friction can make its lining inflamed and cause extra fluid to collect. This creates tenderness and a visible or soft swelling behind the elbow. Bending the arm compresses the bursa, while straightening can stretch the irritated tissue. Elbow Pain is a common presentation of Olecranon Bursitis, but elbow pain can also have other causes.
What you can do
Avoid leaning on the affected elbow and reduce activities that repeatedly bend or press it for a short period. Cold packs wrapped in cloth may calm discomfort; keep each application brief and protect the skin. Gentle movement within a comfortable range can help prevent the joint from becoming guarded. A clinician can check whether infection, injury, or another elbow problem is involved and may suggest suitable pain relief, protection, or physiotherapy.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment if the swelling is hot, increasingly red, rapidly enlarging, or accompanied by fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, if the elbow looks deformed, or if you cannot move the arm. A painful lump that persists or keeps returning also deserves an examination, especially if it limits work, sleep, or everyday movement.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be infected or linked to an injury? Should the elbow be protected during work or sport? Which movements are safe while it settles? What changes would mean I need another review?

Questions people ask
Why is the back of my elbow tender?
Inflammation and extra fluid in the bursa can make the tissue sensitive to touch and pressure.
Can I keep moving my elbow?
Gentle comfortable movement is often reasonable, but avoid painful pressure and repeated loading until you have advice.
