Why does non-hodgkin lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures found in areas such as the neck, armpits, chest, and groin. In non-Hodgkin lymphoma, abnormal lymphocytes may multiply within a node or involve several node groups. The node can then feel enlarged, rubbery, or firm. Some enlarged nodes are painless, while others cause pressure near nearby tissues.

Swollen nodes also commonly occur when the immune system responds to an infection or inflammation. The size, duration, location, texture, and associated symptoms help a clinician decide what evaluation is appropriate. A swollen node by itself does not establish the cause.

Arrange an assessment if a node remains enlarged, grows, feels hard or fixed, or appears without a clear recent infection. Record when you first noticed it and whether you have fever, night sweats, itching, tiredness, or unexplained weight change. A clinician may examine other node groups and decide whether blood tests or imaging are useful.

Seek urgent help if swelling causes difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly worsens, or comes with severe weakness, fainting, or a high fever. Prompt care is also needed for signs of a serious infection or pressure on an important airway.

Ask which features of the node matter, how long observation is reasonable, and whether another cause such as infection is being considered. Ask what tests would clarify the diagnosis and when to return.
