Why does myelodysplastic syndromes cause easy bruising?

Platelets are blood cells that gather at a damaged blood vessel and help form an initial plug. In myelodysplastic syndromes, the bone marrow may not produce enough healthy blood cells. Lower platelet numbers or poorly functioning platelets can allow small bleeds under the skin after minor bumps, leaving purple or blue bruises.

Easy Bruising is a common presentation of Myelodysplastic Syndromes. Easy bruising also has many other possible explanations, including injuries and medicines that affect clotting, so it needs individual assessment.

Tell your clinical team about new bruises, nosebleeds, gum bleeding, pinpoint red-purple spots, or blood in urine or stool. Keep a note of where bruises appear, whether there was an injury, and any bleeding symptoms. This can make changes easier to discuss at an appointment.

Do not start or stop medicines, supplements, or anti-inflammatory pain medicines without advice from the clinician managing your blood condition, because some products can affect bleeding.

Seek urgent medical care for bleeding that does not stop with steady pressure, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, blood in urine, a severe new headache, confusion, or a head injury. These symptoms can signal bleeding that needs immediate assessment.

Contact your haematology team promptly for a sudden increase in bruising or any new bleeding, even if you otherwise feel well.
