Why does Morton's neuroma cause foot pain?

A Morton's neuroma is thickened, irritated tissue around a nerve in the ball of the foot. Repeated pressure, narrow footwear, or activities that load the forefoot can squeeze the nerve. The nerve then sends pain signals during walking or standing, often near the space between the third and fourth toes. Some people describe burning, tingling, numbness, or a feeling that a small stone is inside the shoe.

Choose shoes with a roomy toe box and a low, stable heel so the forefoot has space. Reduce activities that repeatedly push weight onto the toes while pain is active. A soft pad placed behind the painful area may spread pressure, but it should not press directly on the nerve. A clinician can check the foot, assess sensation and footwear, and discuss physiotherapy or other treatment if symptoms continue.

Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, limits walking, or comes with persistent numbness or weakness. Seek prompt care after a major injury, or if the foot becomes markedly swollen, pale, cold, or difficult to move. Burning forefoot pain has several possible causes, so an examination helps distinguish nerve irritation from joint, tendon, or skin problems.
