Why does milia cause skin bumps?

Skin Bumps is a common presentation of Milia. These bumps are usually tiny, rounded, and white or skin-coloured, with a firm feel. They often appear around the eyelids, cheeks, nose, or forehead. Unlike acne, a milium is not formed by an oil-and-bacteria blockage in a pore, so squeezing it usually does not release material and can injure the surrounding skin. Milia may develop on otherwise healthy skin. Some follow skin irritation, an injury, or a blistering process, while others appear without an obvious trigger.

Wash gently, moisturise if your skin is dry, and avoid picking or piercing the bumps at home. Heavy occlusive products around the eyes may be worth reviewing with a clinician, especially if the bumps started after a new product. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and remove persistent milia with a clean, controlled technique. Treatment choice depends on location, number of bumps, skin sensitivity, and whether they keep returning.

Seek an assessment if bumps are painful, inflamed, spreading quickly, leaking, or changing in colour. Arrange review when a bump is close to the eye or when you are unsure whether it is milia, acne, a wart, or another skin condition. Do not try to cut or drain eyelid bumps yourself.
