Short answer

Migraine can cause nausea because the attack affects brain pathways that regulate pain, balance and the stomach.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The connection between migraine and the stomach

Nausea is a very common presentation of Migraine. A migraine attack involves more than head pain: it can affect parts of the nervous system that influence the gut and the feeling of motion. This can leave you feeling sick, less interested in food, or uncomfortable around smells and movement.

Digestion may slow during an attack, which can add to fullness or queasiness and may affect how promptly an oral medicine feels helpful. Nausea can occur with or without a strong headache, and it may be accompanied by light sensitivity, dizziness or vomiting.

Managing nausea during an attack

Rest in a cool, quiet place and take small, frequent sips of fluid rather than forcing a large drink. Bland foods can be easier once the nausea eases; avoid foods, scents or motion that make the feeling worse. Follow the treatment plan agreed with your clinician, including any anti-nausea medicine prescribed for you.

If nausea regularly stops you from keeping down tablets, tell your clinician. They can consider whether a different treatment form or timing would better suit your attacks.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, new weakness, confusion, trouble speaking, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or symptoms following a head injury. Seek prompt help if you cannot keep fluids down or have signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked dizziness or fainting.

Arrange a review when nausea is new, changing, frequent, or no longer follows your familiar migraine pattern. Other causes of nausea may need assessment.

Questions to discuss

Ask which migraine symptoms should prompt a different plan, whether anti-nausea treatment is suitable, and how to take attack medicine when your stomach feels unsettled. A diary of meals, symptoms, medicines and fluid intake can guide that conversation.
