Why does meningitis cause vomiting?

The brain coordinates the nausea and vomiting reflex. Inflammation of the meninges can irritate nearby areas and alter pressure around the brain, which may trigger vomiting. A severe headache, light sensitivity, and feeling generally unwell can occur at the same time. Vomiting is a common presentation of Meningitis, but vomiting alone is often caused by conditions affecting the stomach or other parts of the body.

If vomiting occurs with a severe headache, fever, stiff neck, drowsiness, confusion, or a new rash, seek urgent medical assessment rather than trying to manage it as a stomach upset. While arranging help, take small sips of fluid only if the person is awake and able to swallow safely. Avoid alcohol and do not take extra medicines to mask worsening symptoms without medical advice.

Call emergency services if the person is difficult to wake, has a seizure, develops breathing problems, becomes confused, or has a severe and rapidly worsening headache. Repeated vomiting with signs of dehydration, such as very little urine or inability to keep fluids down, also needs prompt care. Infants and young children with poor feeding, unusual irritability, or marked sleepiness should be assessed urgently.

Ask whether the combination of symptoms could point to an infection around the brain, what testing is appropriate, and how dehydration will be managed. Ask which changes after going home require immediate return for care.
