Why does meningitis cause light sensitivity?

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, is discomfort or pain triggered by light rather than a fear of it. The pathways that carry visual information are closely connected with pain-sensitive tissues around the brain. When the meninges are inflamed, bright light and eye movement can worsen head pain or cause a strong urge to close the eyes. Light Sensitivity is a common presentation of Meningitis. It may appear alongside fever, headache, a stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, or drowsiness. Light sensitivity can also happen with migraine and eye conditions, so it does not by itself establish the cause.

Reduce bright light for comfort while arranging assessment, but do not use a dark room as a reason to delay care when other warning signs are present. Avoid driving if light sensitivity, headache, or blurred vision affects your ability to see safely. Have someone stay with a person who is confused, very sleepy, or deteriorating. Be ready to describe the onset of symptoms, fever, neck pain, headache, vomiting, and any rash to the clinician.

Seek emergency help immediately for light sensitivity with fever and severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, difficulty waking, a seizure, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. New weakness, trouble speaking, or problems walking also need urgent assessment. Babies and young children need prompt care for poor feeding, unusual limpness, persistent irritability, or a bulging soft spot.

Ask whether the symptoms could reflect meningitis, which tests need to happen urgently, and whether treatment should start straight away. Ask what to watch while waiting for assessment and what changes in alertness, breathing, or rash require immediate reporting.
