Why does meningitis cause fever?

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by different infections and, less often, other conditions. When the immune system responds, it releases chemical signals that reset the body's temperature-control centre to a higher level. Shivering and feeling cold can occur while the body is reaching that new temperature. Fever is a common presentation of Meningitis, but fever itself has many more common causes. Meningitis may also cause headache, a stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, or sensitivity to light.

Do not try to judge a possible meningitis infection from temperature alone. If fever occurs with concerning symptoms, arrange urgent clinical assessment rather than waiting to see whether it settles. Keep the person comfortable, offer small sips of fluid if they can swallow safely, and avoid leaving a confused, very drowsy, or deteriorating person alone. Note when symptoms began, recent illnesses, and any medicines already taken, but do not delay seeking help to collect this information.

Seek emergency care immediately for fever with severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, unusual drowsiness, a seizure, repeated vomiting, a new rash that does not fade when pressed, breathing difficulty, or rapid deterioration. For babies and young children, urgent assessment is needed for poor feeding, a weak or high-pitched cry, unusual limpness or irritability, or a bulging soft spot. These symptoms can progress quickly and need prompt examination.

Ask what is causing the fever, which findings make meningitis a concern, and what tests are needed now. Ask what treatment is being started, how changes in alertness or breathing should be reported, and what follow-up is required after assessment.
