Why does meniere's disease cause dizziness?

The inner ear contains fluid-filled structures that sense head movement and position. In Meniere's disease, pressure and fluid changes can interfere with those sensors. The brain receives signals that do not match what the eyes and body are sensing, which may produce a spinning sensation, unsteadiness, nausea, or vomiting. Dizziness is a common presentation of Meniere's Disease. Episodes may occur alongside ear fullness, ringing in the ear, or fluctuating hearing, although dizziness has many other possible causes.

Move to a safe place, sit or lie still, and avoid driving, climbing, cooking, or using machinery while dizziness is active. Keep a record of the episode: when it began, how it felt, associated ear symptoms, triggers, and what helped. Arrange a review with a clinician or ear specialist to discuss the pattern and treatments that may reduce symptoms. Take prescribed medicines only as directed.

Call emergency services for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe new headache, fainting, chest pain, or new difficulty walking. These features require urgent assessment because they may not be caused by an inner-ear condition. Seek prompt medical advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.

Ask what else could be contributing to dizziness, whether hearing and balance tests are useful, and how to reduce the risk of falls. Discuss work, driving, and any medicines that could affect balance or alertness.
