Why does melanoma cause bleeding mole?

Melanoma begins in pigment-producing cells and may alter the structure of a mole as it grows. The surface can become uneven, crusted, irritated, or fragile, allowing minor rubbing or scratching to cause bleeding. Bleeding Mole is a common presentation of Melanoma. A mole can also bleed after shaving, catching on clothing, picking, or other trauma, and benign lesions can become irritated. Bleeding alone cannot determine the cause. Look for accompanying changes such as growth, uneven shape, several colours, a new dark area, crusting, or a sore that does not settle.

Do not pick the mole or remove its surface yourself. If it is bleeding, apply gentle, steady pressure with clean gauze until it stops, then keep the area clean and covered if clothing rubs it. Photographing the spot beside a ruler can help you describe change, but it does not replace examination. Arrange a prompt skin assessment, especially when bleeding was spontaneous or the mole has changed. A clinician may inspect it with magnification and decide whether sampling is needed.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a mole that bleeds without clear injury, repeatedly bleeds, forms a crust, enlarges, changes colour or shape, or becomes painful or persistently itchy. Get urgent care if bleeding is heavy, will not stop with firm pressure, or you feel faint. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before arranging a dermatology review.

Ask what features were seen on examination, whether the lesion needs monitoring or a biopsy, how to protect it from friction, and which changes should trigger faster review. Mention when bleeding began, what may have rubbed the area, and whether the mole has changed in size, border, or colour.
