Why does lung cancer cause unexplained weight loss?

Unexplained Weight Loss is a very common presentation of Lung Cancer. Weight may change alongside tiredness, early fullness, altered taste, breathlessness, pain, or difficulty preparing and eating meals.

Cancer-related inflammation can alter how the body uses energy and protein. A persistent cough, breathlessness, pain, nausea, constipation, or low mood can reduce interest in food. Treatment may also change taste, cause mouth soreness, or make swallowing uncomfortable.

Unplanned weight loss can reduce strength and make daily activities harder, so it is worth discussing early. The cause may be more than one problem, and a weight change alone cannot identify its cause.

Tell your oncology team about appetite, weight changes, swallowing, bowel symptoms, and what you can manage in a day. A dietitian can suggest nourishing foods, drinks, texture changes, and a plan that fits your treatment and cultural preferences.

Try small, frequent meals when large portions feel difficult. Choose foods with protein and energy when tolerated, and ask before using supplements because they may not suit every treatment or medical condition. Treating pain, nausea, constipation, or mouth problems may make eating easier.

Contact your care team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, choke or cough during meals, have new severe weakness, become dizzy, pass very little urine, or are unable to eat because of pain or breathlessness. Urgent help is needed for severe breathing difficulty or confusion.
