Why does lung cancer cause hoarse voice?

The vocal cords need to move and meet evenly to produce a clear voice. A nerve running through the chest controls one of these cords. A tumour can press on or involve that nerve, leaving a cord less mobile and causing breathy, weak, rough, or tiring speech. Hoarse Voice is a common presentation of Lung Cancer, but many voice changes have non-cancer causes.

A cold, reflux, allergies, smoking-related irritation, vocal strain, and benign vocal-cord problems can all lead to hoarseness. The duration and accompanying symptoms help guide assessment rather than the sound of the voice alone.

Arrange a medical review for a voice change that persists or has no clear explanation. Resting the voice from shouting, staying hydrated, and avoiding smoke may ease irritation, but they do not replace assessment of continuing hoarseness. Tell the clinician about cough, swallowing difficulty, neck lumps, pain, weight change, and breathlessness.

Assessment may include listening to the chest, checking the throat and neck, and arranging a specialist view of the vocal cords or chest imaging when needed.

Get urgent help if hoarseness comes with noisy breathing, difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, swelling of the face or neck, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek timely medical advice for persistent hoarseness, especially with coughing up blood, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or a new neck lump.

Ask whether the vocal cords need to be examined, whether reflux or medicines could contribute, and which associated symptoms should change the urgency of follow-up.
