Why does lichen sclerosus cause vaginal itching?

Lichen sclerosus is an inflammatory skin condition that usually affects the vulva and the skin around the vaginal entrance rather than the inside of the vagina. The affected skin may look pale, feel tight, or become dry and cracked. Inflammation activates sensitive nerve endings, so warmth, sweat, urine, pads, or rubbing can intensify the itch. Scratching can create small breaks in the skin, which increases soreness and makes the itch cycle harder to settle. Thrush, contact irritation, and other conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Arrange an examination if itching is persistent, recurrent, or affecting sleep. Use prescribed treatment exactly as directed and keep the area gently clean with water or a recommended bland product. Pat dry rather than rub, wear breathable underwear, and avoid scented wipes, washes, and deodorants. Try not to scratch; cool compresses and keeping fingernails short may reduce skin damage while treatment takes effect.

Seek prompt review for bleeding, open cracks, a non-healing sore, marked swelling, unusual discharge, or a new thickened area. Get urgent help if severe pain, fever, or rapidly spreading redness develops, as infection or another problem may need immediate treatment.
