Why does kidney infection cause cloudy urine?

Urine is normally clear because it contains dissolved waste and water. With infection, immune cells and bacteria can be present in the urinary tract, changing its appearance and sometimes its smell. Cloudy Urine is a common presentation of Kidney Infection. Cloudiness alone does not identify the cause: dehydration, crystals, vaginal discharge or some foods and supplements can also change how urine looks.

Arrange prompt clinical advice if cloudy urine occurs with pain or burning when urinating, urgency, fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. A urine sample can check for infection and guide treatment. Drink fluids if you are able, but do not rely on extra water alone to treat a suspected kidney infection. Use prescribed antibiotics as directed and discuss any kidney condition or medicine allergies before treatment.

Seek urgent medical care for fever with shaking chills, severe side or back pain, persistent vomiting, confusion, fainting, pregnancy, inability to pass urine or a rapid decline in how you feel. These warning signs need timely assessment because infection can spread beyond the urinary tract or there may be a blockage.

Ask whether a urine culture is needed, when the result will be available and whether further tests are needed for stones or obstruction. Tell the clinician about recent urinary infections, diabetes, pregnancy, kidney disease and all medicines or supplements you take.
