Why does inguinal hernia cause abdominal pain?

An inguinal hernia occurs when fatty tissue or bowel protrudes through a weaker part of the lower abdominal wall into the groin. Pulling on nearby tissues, pressure within the hernia, and muscle movement can produce an ache, heaviness, or sharper discomfort. Pain may be more noticeable with lifting, coughing, standing for a long time, or straining. Arrange a medical assessment for a new groin bulge or recurring lower abdominal discomfort. Note whether a lump appears with activity, becomes smaller when you lie down, or changes in tenderness. Get urgent medical help for sudden severe or rapidly worsening groin or abdominal pain, a bulge that becomes hard or cannot be pushed back, vomiting, abdominal swelling, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. These features can occur when tissue within a hernia is trapped and needs prompt assessment.
