Why does influenza cause cough?

Inflamed airway tissue becomes sensitive to air, mucus, talking, and movement. Coughing is a protective reflex that helps clear secretions and irritants, although it can persist while the lining settles. Cough is a very common presentation of Influenza. A cough alone does not identify its cause, since many respiratory and non-respiratory problems can trigger it.

Drink fluids regularly and rest your voice when coughing makes your throat sore. Warm drinks, humidified air, and avoiding smoke or strong fragrances may reduce irritation for some people. Choose cough or pain medicines with a pharmacist's guidance, especially for children, pregnancy, long-term illness, or regular prescriptions.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, a blue or grey appearance around the lips, severe drowsiness, or confusion. Contact a clinician when a cough is getting worse after initial improvement, prevents drinking or sleeping, or occurs with dehydration or symptoms that feel unusually severe for you.

Ask whether the cough sounds consistent with airway irritation, whether an examination or testing is needed, and which treatments fit your health history. Tell them whether your cough is dry or brings up mucus, and describe any wheeze, breathlessness, or chest discomfort.
