Why Does a Hip Labral Tear Cause Hip Clicking and Snapping?

Short answer
Hip Clicking and Snapping is a common presentation of Hip Labral Tear because an irregular or unstable labral edge can be caught as the hip moves.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a click can happen
The labrum forms a seal around the hip socket. When part of it is torn or frayed, the changing pressure and contact inside the joint can create a catching sensation as the thigh turns or the hip bends. A person may feel the click deep in the groin, at the side of the hip, or near the front crease. A click that is painless and occasional can also come from tendons moving over bone, so sound alone does not establish a labral tear. Clicking becomes more useful to a clinician when it is linked with pain, stiffness, reduced motion, or a sense that the hip catches during a particular movement.
What to do about the clicking
Notice whether the sound occurs with pain, a blocked feeling, or giving-way, and stop repeatedly provoking it to check. Modify deep flexion, pivoting, and fast direction changes if they reproduce symptoms. Comfortable walking and gentle movement are often reasonable, but a clinician should tailor activity advice when pain persists. Assessment can include hip motion, strength, gait, and nearby back or pelvic areas. Physiotherapy may improve muscle control and load tolerance; imaging may be considered when examination findings suggest an internal joint problem.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if clicking is painful, frequent, associated with catching, or limiting sport, work, sleep, or walking. Seek urgent care after a fall or collision if you cannot bear weight, the hip looks deformed, or severe pain began suddenly. Prompt advice is also needed for fever with a hot swollen joint, new weakness, or numbness. Those features can signal a more urgent injury, infection, or nerve issue rather than a simple painless click.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what structure may be producing the click, whether the movement should be modified, whether physiotherapy could help, if imaging would add useful information, and which symptoms require faster review.

Questions people ask
Is every hip click caused by a labral tear?
No. Tendons and other structures can also make a hip click, especially when it is painless and occasional.
Can a labral tear click without pain?
It can, but painless clicking alone does not show whether a tear is present or whether treatment is needed.
