Why does hammer toe cause toe pain?

With hammer toe, a toe curls downward at a joint. The top of the toe can rub against the inside of a shoe, while its tip may press into the ground. These repeated contacts irritate the skin and the tissues around the joint. Because the toe no longer shares pressure normally, nearby toes and the ball of the foot may also work harder. Pain can be worse in narrow shoes, after long periods on your feet, or when the toe is moved. A flexible deformity may still straighten, whereas a fixed one needs a more careful assessment.

Try footwear with a broad, high toe area and avoid shoes that press on the bent joint. A cushioned sock or professionally selected pad may protect a rubbing spot. Keep the skin moisturised but do not place lotion between toes if the area stays damp. Gentle exercises may help a flexible toe when recommended by a clinician. Do not remove thickened skin with a blade or chemical product without medical guidance.

Arrange care if Toe Pain lasts despite changing shoes, limits normal walking, or comes with a recurring corn. Prompt medical review is needed for broken skin, pus, spreading warmth or redness, fever, sudden deformity, or new numbness.
