Why does hallux rigidus cause toe pain?

Short answer
Toe Pain is a common presentation of Hallux Rigidus because the big-toe joint becomes stiff and irritated during movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening in the joint
Hallux rigidus affects the joint where the big toe meets the foot. As the joint becomes less flexible, the toe cannot bend upward normally when you walk, climb stairs, or push off. The joint surfaces and surrounding tissues may become irritated, while a firm bump on top of the joint can rub against shoes. Pain may be felt at the base of the big toe, along its top, or during the push-off part of a step. Stiffness after rest and reduced movement can accompany the discomfort.
Practical steps
Choose shoes with a roomy toe box and a sole that does not force the big toe to bend sharply. Reducing activities that repeatedly provoke pain can settle irritation while you arrange advice. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess movement, footwear, walking mechanics, and options such as exercises, an insert, or other treatment. Do not forcefully stretch a painful joint.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain persists, walking becomes difficult, or the joint is increasingly stiff. Seek prompt medical help for sudden severe pain with marked redness, warmth, swelling, fever, or an injury that changes the toe’s shape or ability to bear weight.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pain pattern fits hallux rigidus, whether an examination or imaging is needed, which activities are safe, and how footwear or physiotherapy could protect the joint.

Questions people ask
Why does walking hurt with hallux rigidus?
Walking repeatedly asks the big toe to bend upward, and a stiff, irritated joint can hurt during that push-off movement.
Can shoes make hallux rigidus pain worse?
Yes. Tight or flexible shoes may press on the joint or require more big-toe bending.
