Why does gout cause toe pain?

Inflammation can make the toe joint hot, red, swollen and extremely tender. Even light pressure from a shoe or bedsheet may feel uncomfortable. Toe Pain is a common presentation of Gout, but toe symptoms can also follow an injury, infection or another joint problem. A clinician can review the pattern, examine the joint and decide whether testing is needed.

Rest the foot and raise it when practical. Choose roomy footwear or avoid pressure over the painful joint. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may help briefly. Use the flare medicine prescribed for you and follow its instructions; avoid adding pain medicines without checking that they are suitable for your health history. Arrange a review if attacks recur or treatment is not helping.

Seek urgent help for a red, hot, painful toe with fever, spreading redness, pus or feeling very unwell. These features can point to infection. Prompt assessment is also needed after an injury that changes the toe’s shape, or when pain prevents walking.

Ask whether the symptoms fit gout, whether the joint needs testing, and how to use your prescribed medicines at the first sign of a flare. Ask about footwear, prevention and when normal activity can resume.
