Why does golfer's elbow cause elbow pain?

Short answer
Most people with Golfer's Elbow notice elbow pain because repeated strain irritates the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the inner elbow.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain means
Golfer's elbow involves the common tendon on the inside of the elbow. It connects muscles that bend the wrist and fingers to the upper-arm bone. Repeated gripping, throwing, climbing, racquet sports or forceful wrist bending can overload this attachment. The area may become sensitive, so pain often increases when you grip, turn your palm down or lift. Elbow Pain is a common presentation of Golfer's Elbow, but inner-elbow pain can also have other causes.
What you can do
Reduce or modify the activity that brings on the pain for a short period, while keeping the elbow gently moving. Avoid repeatedly testing the painful grip. A wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort after activity; protect the skin and use it briefly. A clinician or physiotherapist can check strength and movement, guide gradual tendon-loading exercises, and review technique, equipment and work demands. Do not push through sharp or worsening pain.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits work or sleep, or returns whenever normal activity resumes. Seek prompt medical care after a significant injury, or if the elbow is badly swollen, visibly deformed, numb, weak, unusually hot or red, or difficult to move. Fever with a hot, painful joint also needs urgent assessment because infection and other problems can resemble tendon pain.
Questions for your doctor
Could the pain be coming from the tendon, the joint or a nerve? Which movements should I temporarily change? What exercise progression fits my current strength? When should I return to lifting or sport?

Questions people ask
Can golfer's elbow cause pain when gripping?
Yes. Gripping activates the forearm muscles attached to the irritated inner-elbow tendon, which can reproduce pain.
Does elbow pain always come from golfer's elbow?
No. Elbow pain has several possible causes, so persistent, severe or unusual symptoms deserve an examination.
