Why does folliculitis cause itchy scalp?

Each hair grows from a follicle surrounded by skin that can become inflamed. That inflammation may cause itching, stinging, tenderness, or tiny bumps around individual hairs. Sweat, oil, occlusive headwear, scratching, or irritating hair products can intensify the sensation and damage the skin barrier.

Itchy Scalp is a common presentation of Folliculitis. Itching alone does not establish the cause; dandruff, contact irritation, psoriasis, eczema, and other scalp conditions can feel similar.

Wash the scalp gently and rinse products thoroughly. Avoid scratching, heavy oils, tight hats, and fragranced products until the cause is clearer. Keep combs, brushes, and pillowcases clean, and ask a clinician whether the scalp needs a medicated wash or another treatment after examination.

Arrange a review if itching persists, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by pus-filled bumps, crusting, spreading redness, hair loss in patches, or scalp pain. Seek prompt care if swelling becomes extensive or you develop fever or feel significantly unwell.
