Why does fibrocystic breast changes cause breast pain?

Breast Pain is a very common presentation of Fibrocystic Breast Changes. Hormonal shifts can make breast tissue retain fluid and become more swollen or sensitive, often around the menstrual cycle. A fluid-filled cyst can press on nearby tissue, while fibrous areas may feel tight, heavy, or tender. Pain may affect one or both breasts and may spread toward the armpit or upper chest. Its timing and pattern can offer clues, but pain alone does not establish the cause.

Note when pain starts, where it occurs, and whether it changes with your cycle, activity, or medicines. A supportive bra, warm or cool packs, and avoiding repeated checking may help. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is suitable for you, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if you take other medicines. Persistent symptoms may need an examination and imaging.

Arrange an assessment when pain is new, persistent, localised to one spot, worsening, or associated with a new lump. Seek prompt advice for nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or an armpit swelling. Get urgent help for a hot, red, rapidly painful breast with fever, as infection may need treatment.
