Why do endometrial polyps cause heavy periods?

Endometrial polyps grow from the tissue lining the uterus. They can add fragile tissue to the surface that sheds during a period. The surrounding lining may also become uneven, so shedding is less orderly and bleeding can last longer or be more difficult to predict. Some people notice clots, flooding, or tiredness after repeated heavy bleeding. Other conditions, medicines, hormonal changes, and pregnancy-related problems can also affect menstrual flow. Heavy periods by themselves do not establish the cause.

Keep a simple record of pad or tampon changes, clots, bleeding days, pain, and bleeding between periods. Book a medical review if heavy flow is affecting work, sleep, exercise, or daily activities. A clinician may check for anaemia and use an ultrasound or another uterine assessment to look for a polyp. Treatment depends on the findings, symptoms, and whether you are planning pregnancy.

Get urgent help if heavy bleeding causes faintness, marked weakness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or severe pelvic pain. Seek prompt advice for bleeding in pregnancy, after menopause, or with a positive pregnancy test.
