Why Do Cracked Heels Cause Cracked Skin?

Heel skin absorbs repeated force from standing and walking. Friction, pressure, and an open shoe can add to that stress. As moisture falls, the surface becomes rough and less elastic. A thick callused rim may then form around a dry area. When the heel spreads against the ground, the stiff rim is pulled apart and a visible split can develop.

A shallow crack may sting when water or soap reaches it. Deeper fissures can bleed or hurt with each step because the split reaches more sensitive tissue. Itching, scaling, or changes on other parts of the foot can suggest an additional skin condition and deserve assessment if they persist.

Keep the area clean with gentle washing and dry it carefully. Apply a rich, fragrance-free emollient to intact surrounding skin, then use socks and closed, supportive footwear to limit rubbing. Avoid picking, sharp tools, and aggressive scraping, which can enlarge the opening.

If the fissure is open, painful, or recurring, a clinician can recommend dressings or a targeted treatment and check for contributing skin conditions. Follow product directions and avoid putting irritant creams into a deep open crack unless advised.

Seek care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain, or a crack that will not close. Get advice sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or difficulty walking, because a small foot wound may need closer monitoring.

Ask how deep the fissure appears, whether infection or another rash is contributing, and which dressing or moisturiser is safe. Tell the clinician how long it has been present, whether it bleeds, and what footwear or products make it worse.
