Why does COPD cause wheezing?

Wheezing is a very common presentation of COPD. It is often more noticeable while breathing out, when the smaller airways naturally become narrower.

Wheezing can come and go. Colds, smoke, dust, strong odours, or a COPD flare-up may irritate the airways and make the sound louder or more frequent.

Not every wheeze comes from COPD. A new sound, wheeze on one side, or wheeze with sudden breathing difficulty deserves medical assessment, particularly if it differs from your established symptoms.

Follow your prescribed COPD plan and use inhalers only in the way you were shown. A clinician can check the inhaler device, dose timing, and whether you can coordinate your breath with it.

Try to identify triggers by noting where and when wheezing starts. Ventilate rooms during cooking or cleaning, avoid smoke exposure, and keep medicines available when leaving home if this is part of your plan.

Seek same-day advice if wheezing is clearly worse than usual, follows a respiratory illness, or comes with increased phlegm or breathlessness. Emergency assessment is needed for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, or collapse.
