Why does chronic sinusitis cause postnasal drip?

The nose and sinuses normally make mucus to trap particles and keep surfaces moist. During long-lasting sinus inflammation, the lining can swell and produce more secretions. Instead of moving forward and out of the nose, some mucus travels toward the throat. This can leave a need to clear the throat, a tickle, hoarseness, a nighttime cough, or a sensation of something stuck behind the nose. Postnasal Drip is a very common presentation of Chronic Sinusitis, although allergies, reflux, irritants, and some medicines can produce similar symptoms.

Sip fluids regularly and avoid smoke, vaping, and strong scents that irritate the nasal lining. Sleeping with the head slightly elevated may reduce pooling in the throat overnight. Saline nasal rinsing can help some people clear secretions; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water, and wash the device after use. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on suitable nasal treatments and whether allergies or reflux should be addressed. Avoid repeatedly forceful throat clearing, which can further irritate the throat; a sip of water or swallow may be gentler.

See a clinician for persistent drip, a recurring cough, hoarseness that does not settle, difficulty swallowing, or sinus symptoms that affect daily life. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, coughing blood, chest pain, swelling around an eye, vision changes, confusion, a stiff neck, or a severe new headache. Those warning signs require assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask whether the drainage is likely to be from sinus inflammation, allergies, reflux, or another source; whether you should have a nasal examination; and how long to try a recommended treatment before review. Describe the timing, cough, voice changes, nasal blockage, and any heartburn.
