Why does chronic kidney disease cause frequent urination?

Frequent Urination is a common presentation of Chronic Kidney Disease. Healthy kidneys adjust water removal so urine becomes more concentrated when the body needs to conserve fluid. Damage to the kidney's filtering and concentrating systems can weaken that adjustment. You may then pass urine more often, including overnight, even if each trip produces a different amount.

Urinary frequency can also arise from a urinary infection, diabetes, bladder conditions, pregnancy, caffeine, alcohol or certain medicines. Burning, fever, pelvic pain, sudden urgency or blood in urine are details that can point to another problem needing assessment.

Keep a bladder diary for several days, recording drinks, toilet visits, estimated urine amount, night-time waking and associated symptoms. Bring your current medicine list to your appointment, including non-prescription products. Follow any personalised fluid guidance from your kidney team and do not reduce fluids sharply on your own, as dehydration can put further stress on the kidneys.

Contact a clinician promptly if frequent urination is new or changing, or occurs with pain, fever, blood in urine, new thirst, swelling or unexplained weight change. Seek urgent assessment if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower abdominal or back pain, become confused, or have fever with shaking chills.
