Why does cervical radiculopathy cause neck pain?

Cervical radiculopathy starts where a nerve leaves the spinal canal. Disc material, joint changes, or swelling can narrow the space around that root. The irritated tissues send pain signals, and the neck may become guarded, making turning or looking up uncomfortable.

The pain can remain near the neck or be accompanied by symptoms down the shoulder and arm. Neck pain has many causes, including muscle strain and other spinal conditions, so the pattern and examination matter more than the location alone.

Arrange a clinical review if neck pain lasts, keeps returning, or travels into the arm. Change position regularly, support your forearms during desk work, and try comfortable gentle neck movement rather than forcing a stretch. Avoid sudden loading or self-directed forceful manipulation.

Seek urgent assessment after major trauma, or if neck pain comes with worsening arm weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, fever, severe headache, or bladder or bowel changes. Sudden neurological symptoms need emergency care.
