Why does cellulitis cause skin swelling?

Skin Swelling is a common presentation of Cellulitis. Infection activates local blood vessels and immune cells. The vessel walls become more permeable, so fluid, proteins, and defensive cells move into the surrounding tissue. This creates puffiness, tightness, and sometimes a firm or shiny appearance. Swelling may extend beyond the most visibly affected patch, particularly on an arm, hand, leg, or foot. It can occur alongside warmth, redness, tenderness, and reduced movement. Swelling by itself has many possible causes, so its speed, location, skin changes, and accompanying symptoms help guide assessment.

Seek prompt medical advice for new swelling that is warm, painful, red, or getting larger. Keep the area clean and avoid tight clothing, vigorous massage, squeezing, or puncturing the skin. If an arm or leg is affected, raising it while resting may ease pressure. Remove rings or other tight items from a swollen hand before swelling increases. A clinician may prescribe treatment for the infection and check for an abscess or another cause. Follow the treatment instructions and report any worsening.

Obtain urgent help if swelling develops quickly, pain is severe, the skin becomes blistered or dark, or you have fever, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, or breathlessness. Facial or eye swelling, swelling near a recent procedure, or swelling with difficulty moving a limb requires prompt review. A swollen leg with sudden breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency.
