Why Do Bunions Cause Foot Pain?

A bunion develops around the joint at the base of the big toe. As the joint angles and the inner edge of the foot becomes more prominent, shoes may press and rub over the area. The joint lining and nearby soft tissues can become inflamed, causing soreness, burning, or tenderness. The big toe may also crowd the other toes, shifting weight toward the ball of the foot and creating extra pressure there. Foot pain is a common presentation of Bunions, but pain can arise from several foot conditions.

Choose shoes with a wide, roomy toe box and avoid footwear that squeezes the front of the foot. Padded protection may reduce rubbing, while a clinician or podiatrist can advise whether an insert or toe exercise is appropriate. Gentle activity is reasonable if it remains comfortable, but persistent pain deserves an examination to check joint movement, skin irritation, and other causes of forefoot pain.

Arrange assessment if the bunion is steadily changing, pain interferes with walking, or footwear is becoming difficult to tolerate. Seek prompt care for a hot, very red, suddenly swollen joint, an open sore, fever, or new numbness, especially if you have diabetes or reduced circulation.

Ask whether the pain comes from the bunion joint or another area, which footwear changes may help, whether an X-ray is useful, and when physiotherapy or surgery should be considered.
