Why Does Bromhidrosis Cause Body Odour?

Short answer

Most people with Bromhidrosis notice body odour because bacteria on moist skin break down sweat and release compounds with a strong smell.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main mechanism
Skin bacteria break down sweat into strong-smelling compounds.
Helpful habit
Wash, dry, and change damp clothing promptly.

How the odour forms

Fresh sweat is often not strongly scented. Odour develops when skin microorganisms use substances in sweat and oils as food, producing smelly by-products. Warm, damp areas such as the underarms, feet, and groin support this process. Hair, clothing, and skin folds can hold moisture and odour, making it last longer. Bromhidrosis may be influenced by sweating, skin bacteria, hygiene challenges, clothing, or an underlying skin problem.

Body Odour is a very common presentation of Bromhidrosis. A change in smell can have many explanations, so body odour alone does not identify one condition.

Reducing odour

Wash odour-prone areas gently, dry skin folds carefully, and change damp clothing and socks promptly. Choose breathable fabrics and clean items that hold smell. An antiperspirant may reduce moisture, while a deodorant masks or reduces odour; these products work differently. Stop any product that causes burning or a rash. If home measures do not help, a clinician can discuss targeted washes or treatments suited to your skin.

When to seek help

Arrange medical advice if odour is sudden, persistent despite careful washing, or accompanied by a rash, sores, pain, discharge, or excessive sweating. Seek assessment if the smell affects daily life or returns quickly after treatment. A clinician can examine the skin, look for infection or irritation, and consider other causes when the pattern does not fit ordinary sweat-related odour.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the odour appears to come from bromhidrosis, which products are appropriate for the affected area, and whether sweating or a skin condition is contributing. Mention its location, timing, triggers, associated rash, and products already tried.
