What body odour feels like

Body odour is a noticeable smell from the skin, often around the underarms, feet, groin or folds. Sweat itself is usually not strongly scented; odour can develop when bacteria break down substances in sweat. The smell may be sharp, sour, musty or different from your usual scent. Dampness, friction and tight clothing can make it more noticeable.

Body odour happens when skin bacteria break down sweat, and treatment depends on the cause and body area involved.

Is body odour urgent?

Body odour alone is rarely urgent. Arrange a dermatology assessment if it persists despite gentle washing and clean, breathable clothing, or if it comes with rash, soreness, peeling, pits on the soles, discharge or a sudden change in smell. Seek prompt medical care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling or severe pain.

Possible causes of body odour

The following causes are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood. Bromhidrosis is odour produced when sweat and bacteria interact, particularly in areas with apocrine glands. Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial infection that can affect warm skin folds and may cause reddish-brown patches with odour. Pitted keratolysis affects the soles, where sweating and bacteria can create small pits and a strong smell. Heat, exercise, occlusive footwear and incomplete drying can intensify odour without being a separate condition.

How body odour is diagnosed

A clinician asks when the smell began, where it occurs, whether sweating changed and which products you use. They inspect the skin, folds, nails and feet for redness, scale, moisture, pits or broken skin. The pattern can distinguish a bacterial skin condition from sweat-related odour. Testing is sometimes considered when the appearance is unclear or an infection needs confirmation.

Treatment by cause

Care is matched to the finding. Bacterial conditions may need a prescribed topical treatment, while bromhidrosis is often managed by reducing moisture and bacterial breakdown. A clinician may recommend a stronger antiperspirant such as Prescription Antiperspirant when sweating drives the problem. Botulinum toxin injections may be discussed for focal, troublesome sweating after assessment. Do not apply harsh antiseptics or fragranced products to irritated skin.

Reducing body odour

Wash sweat-prone areas gently and dry skin folds carefully. Change damp shirts, socks and underwear promptly; choose breathable fabrics and rotate shoes so they can dry. Apply antiperspirant to dry skin as directed, and avoid sharing towels or footwear. If shaving, friction or a new product has irritated the area, pause the trigger while the skin settles.

Symptoms that may occur with body odour

Notice whether odour comes with sweating, itch, redness, scaling, tenderness, peeling or small pits. The location matters: fold changes suggest a different assessment from foot changes. Recording triggers such as heat, exercise, footwear or a new deodorant can help a clinician connect the smell with the skin findings.

What to do next

Persistent odour deserves a skin examination when self-care has not helped. Bring a list of products and medicines, and mention any change in sweating. Treatment can then target moisture, bacteria, inflammation or another skin problem rather than masking the smell alone.
