Why does brain tumour cause persistent headache?

Persistent Headache is a very common presentation of Brain Tumour. The brain itself does not sense pain, but its coverings, blood vessels, and nearby tissues do. A growing tumour can stretch or press on these structures. It can also obstruct the normal movement or drainage of fluid, or cause surrounding swelling; these changes may raise pressure inside the skull and produce a headache.

The pattern may be new, steadily worsening, different from earlier headaches, or more noticeable with coughing, straining, bending, or waking. Headache alone does not identify the cause. Migraine, tension, sinus disease, medication effects, vision problems, and other conditions can also cause ongoing pain, so a clinician considers the complete pattern and associated symptoms.

Keep a brief record of when the headache starts, where it hurts, how severe it feels, what makes it worse, and whether nausea, vision change, weakness, or confusion occurs. Include pain medicines and their effect. Book a medical assessment for a new or persistent pattern, especially when the headache is progressively changing or different from your usual experience.

A clinician may perform a neurological examination and decide whether imaging or other tests are appropriate. Use medicines only as directed on the label or by your clinician, because frequent use of some pain relievers can itself contribute to recurring headache. Do not delay assessment by repeatedly treating a changing headache at home.

Seek emergency care for a sudden, severe headache; headache with new weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, seizure, severe confusion, repeated vomiting, fever with a stiff neck, or difficulty waking. New vision loss or a rapidly worsening headache also needs urgent evaluation. These warning signs can reflect a serious neurological problem and should not be judged by pain intensity alone.

Ask what features of your headache are concerning, whether you need brain imaging, how to use pain relief safely, and which changes should trigger emergency care. If a tumour is already known, ask whether swelling or fluid pressure could be contributing and how your treatment plan addresses it.
