Why does bacterial vaginosis cause vaginal itching?

Vaginal Itching is a common presentation of Bacterial Vaginosis. A change in the usual bacterial balance can alter vaginal fluid and the local environment. That change may irritate the vulva, particularly when discharge stays against the skin. Burning or soreness can occur as well, although itching is not specific to bacterial vaginosis.

Thrush, contact irritation from soaps or pads, eczema, and sexually transmitted infections can also cause itching. The type of discharge, odour, skin changes, pain, and recent exposures help a clinician decide which tests are useful.

Have new or ongoing itching assessed, especially when it comes with discharge or odour. Wash the outside gently with water or a mild unscented cleanser, then pat dry. Avoid douching, scented products, tight damp clothing, and scratching. These measures may reduce irritation but do not treat the bacterial imbalance.

Use only treatment recommended for the confirmed cause. A thrush medicine may not help bacterial vaginosis and can delay the right assessment.

Seek prompt medical advice for itching with pelvic pain, fever, sores, marked swelling, pain when passing urine, or bleeding outside your period. Arrange testing after possible sexually transmitted infection exposure, and mention pregnancy or recent antibiotics.
