Why does atopic dermatitis cause cracked skin?

When the skin barrier loses water, it becomes less flexible and more likely to split. Inflammation makes the surface rough and fragile, while scratching removes protective cells and widens small breaks. Cracks often form where skin bends or moves, such as the hands, knuckles, fingertips, ankles and behind the knees. They may sting when exposed to water or cleanser and can bleed if the split is deep. Cracked Skin is a common presentation of Atopic Dermatitis, but the location and appearance still matter when a clinician assesses it.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry and apply a thick fragrance-free ointment or cream. Reapply after handwashing and cover a painful fissure with a clean dressing if it is rubbing against clothing. Use gloves for wet household tasks, avoid picking at loose skin and keep nails trimmed. A clinician may add treatment to calm inflammation or address a crack that is not healing; do not seal an infected-looking area without medical advice.

Arrange an appointment if cracks are deep, recurrent, bleeding, limiting movement or failing to heal. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or redness that is spreading from a fissure. Rapid swelling of the face or difficulty breathing requires emergency help.
