Why does aplastic anaemia cause easy bruising?

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. In aplastic anaemia, marrow activity is reduced, so the body may have fewer platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells. With too few platelets, small knocks may leave larger or more frequent bruises because a platelet plug forms less readily.

Easy Bruising is a very common presentation of Aplastic Anaemia. Other possible signs include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, tiny red or purple spots on the skin, tiredness, paleness, fever, or infections. Each symptom needs interpretation in the context of a person's overall health and blood results.

Contact the clinical team that is managing your condition if bruising is increasing or you notice new bleeding. Until you have been advised otherwise, reduce the chance of cuts or falls, use a soft toothbrush, and ask before taking medicines or supplements that can affect bleeding. Keep a record of bruises, bleeding episodes, fever, and any new medicines.

Do not assume a bruise is harmless if it appears without an injury or changes quickly. A blood count and clinical assessment can show whether low platelets or another problem is contributing.

Seek urgent medical care for bleeding that will not stop, blood in vomit, urine, or stool, a severe headache after a head injury, sudden weakness, fainting, black stools, or a widespread pinpoint rash. Fever or signs of infection also need prompt advice in aplastic anaemia because white blood cell levels may be low.
