Why Does Angioedema Cause Skin Swelling?

Angioedema involves swelling below the skin surface. Chemical messengers can make nearby small blood vessels relax and allow more fluid through their walls. That fluid collects between tissue cells, creating a raised, tight, or puffy area. Most people with Angioedema notice skin swelling on the face, lips, hands, feet, or other areas, and the affected skin may feel warm or uncomfortable. Hives and itching can occur when the surface skin is involved, but deeper angioedema may look smooth and lack a visible rash.
