Why does anaemia cause easy bruising?

Bruises form when small blood vessels bleed beneath the skin. Red blood cells carry oxygen, while platelets and clotting proteins help stop bleeding. Some illnesses, nutritional problems, medicines, or bleeding disorders can affect more than one part of this system, leading to both anaemia and bruising.

Easy Bruising is a common presentation of Anaemia. Many bruises also follow minor knocks that are easy to forget, and some medicines can make bruising more noticeable. The pattern, size, location, and any bleeding elsewhere provide important clues.

Arrange a medical review for new or increasing bruising, particularly if you also feel tired, short of breath, pale, or weak. Take photographs if bruises change quickly, and note any medicines, supplements, heavy periods, nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or family history of bleeding problems.

Do not stop a prescribed blood-thinning medicine without medical advice. A clinician may review your medicines and request blood tests that look at red blood cells, platelets, and clotting where appropriate.

Seek urgent care for bruising with uncontrolled bleeding, blood in vomit or stools, black stools, severe headache after a head injury, sudden weakness, or fainting. These signs need prompt assessment.

Get same-day advice if many unexplained bruises appear rapidly, tiny red-purple spots spread over the skin, or bleeding from the nose or gums does not settle.
