Why does anaemia cause dizziness?

The body normally adjusts blood pressure and heart rate when you rise from sitting or lying down. If oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced, those adjustments may feel less effective and you may experience lightheadedness, a floating feeling, or brief dimming of vision. Symptoms can be more noticeable after exertion, heat, missed meals, or dehydration.

Dizziness is a very common presentation of Anaemia. It is also linked with many other conditions, including inner-ear problems, migraine, low blood pressure, infections, and medicine effects, so the type and timing of dizziness matter.

Sit or lie down as soon as dizziness begins, especially if you feel you might fall. Stand up slowly, use support if needed, and drink water if you can swallow safely. Avoid ladders, driving, or machinery until you feel steady.

Make an appointment if episodes recur or if you also have fatigue, paleness, breathlessness, heavy periods, or changes in bowel habits. A clinician can check your history, examine you, and decide which blood tests or other checks are appropriate.

Seek urgent medical care if dizziness comes with chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, a new severe headache, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Urgent review is also appropriate after substantial bleeding, black stools, vomiting blood, or an injury caused by a fall. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unsteady.

Ask whether your dizziness sounds related to anaemia or another cause, what may be causing any anaemia, and what changes should prompt earlier review. Bring a note of when episodes occur and what you were doing at the time.
